Rick Detrolio and Kirk Pierret ran their 10th Morris Mauler race.
Rick Remains Undefeated in his age group for every race he has
run here. Superman (on his shirt) remains one of the toughest 65 year
old runners in NJ and dominates tough challenges like this course.
Liam Collins from Princeton won the 11th Morris Mauler by pulling
away from 4 time winner Dominic Grillo. Liam took it out hard, fought
for the lead over the first 2 hills and never looked back as he motored
to a very impressive 19:02 on the extra slow conditions for New Jersey's
toughest 5k race. Duncan Villareria, although arriving 90 seconds before
the start, took 3rd place, running a very gutty race without the proper
warmup needed for a strong race on this brutal course.
Jenna Kalwa from Princeton, although just starting her season as
a freshman on the powerful Hopewell Valley Girl's Cross Country team
(and she is only their 3rd girl), won her unprecedented 5th Morris
Mauler title. She ran a very impressive race and finished in 23:22
on the slow, muddy, rocky, rooty, slippery course. She won
by a small margin over Alexandra Niles of Montclair. Alexandra stayed
very close for first 2 1/2 miles until Jenna's experience and knowledge
of our course prevailed. Nancy Siestsma of Mahwah rounded out the top
3 by gaining the bronze medal in her 1st Morris Mauler.
Kirk Pierret (10th race) of Whippany and Chris Ryan
of Morristown were top men masters runners. Siestma and
Lisa Digiacinto of Succasuna were top women's masters runners, placing
very high overall, showing that age and experience can win out over
the younger novice runners.

Button won yet another age group title as he dominated the race directors
age group... maybe.... directing the race and racing the course in the
spring for an attempt at the 50's course record???? Jim says he is
up for the challenge.....
Bulmer from Whippany and Mattiace from Madison ran away with Most
Improved awards. They showed gutty, gritty, hard work in preparation,
and determination in battle, to notch Most Improved top honors. The
Skydel family continues to excel and improve, as MIP award was expanded
to top 10 runners setting up the "New 1st time ever" Handicapped
Stakes race. (see story at left, top)
Dave Mattiace battled defending champ John Guth over the last 1/2
mile to win 1st title as top Clydesdale, in personal record setting
time, using new patented racing shoes for Mauler races.... Kristina
Spirito of Fords prevailed by only 12 seconds over defending champion
Dana Zarlenga of Green Brook for the Athena title.
Hoch and Olivola remain "Undefeated" in the horseshoe tournament
at the post race party. Brennan and Wisse were runners-up, winning "consolation
match". Wisse Claims footfault was the key to their demise....
Thanks to Jeff Webb, Dana Gross, Ed Levy, Roger Price, John Guth (8
races), Chris Ricciardi (8 races), Greg Mullins, and of course Bob
Koppenol of Starting Line Sports for invaluable help in putting on
this race after all the setbacks during the prior week. John and Chris
gave up their warm-up in assisting to lay out the course after the
torrential rain storm of Friday night. We would not have had this event
without them. We thank you so much and appreciate your kind and considerate
help throughout the preparation for this event.

Sabatino and Kalwa win 9th Morris Mauler 5k
John Sabatino, 40, returned to win his 1st
Title after 4 tries, having placed a 3rd, a 2nd, and a 5th in his previous
attempts in 2004 and 05. John has been having a great year as a master
runner and pulled away from newcomer "Iron man" Murray Resinski
to win by 13 seconds in a great battle of front runner versus pursuer.
Both Runners are from Local Morris Plains. Joseph Skydel from Mendham,
a Newark academy H.S. runner, took 3rd place by slashing nearly 2 minutes
from last years fall race time.
Jenna Kalwa won her 3rd consecutive Morris Mauler title and broke
the 3 year old course record by 20 seconds. Jenna ran an incredibly
strong race up the hills, erasing the "Cross Country Legend" Joy
Jaworowski's time of 22:38. Danielle Stanton took 2nd place in her
1st Morris Mauler race. Natalie St. John of local Mendham rounded out
the top women by running her 4th Morris Mauler race having always finished
in the top 3 spots.
John Guth, Brian Karl, and Mike Lysak were the top Clydesdale runners
(men 195 and over) battling the brutal hills as the strong runners
they are. It is tough enough for a sleek/lithe distance runner to run
up these extreme climbs let alone the stalwart performances of the
bigger guys.
Hard work does pay off as returning runners vie for the coveted "Most
Improved Runner" awards. Daniel Lim from Great Neck, NY won the top
spot chopping off 14% off his previous best. Rounding out the top finishers,
beating their previous bests by substantial time were Ryan Alderson,
Joseph Skydel, Ryuichi Saito, Brian Karl, Brian Knierem, Jodi Tofel
and Stephanie Abrusia. Of course their times pale to their road times
by 3-4 minutes, but pain and battle of will is the effort it takes
to improve on New Jersey's toughest 5k race!
National Class Veteran Runners J.L. Seymore and Rick Detrolio smashed
60 and 65 year age group records respectively.
The weather was a chilly 48 degrees but wind and rain held off on
the cloudy Saturday morning as all runners were treated to our special
Vegan Chilli and great barbecue cookout and lots of other trail running
foodstuffs.
Thanks to all participants for making this a great event and the
race staff for treating the runners with such enthusiasm and kind
attention.

Dominic Grillo wins his 4th Morris Mauler
Title in 18:54. Jenna Kalwa and Natalie St. John Smash age group record
as they take 1st and 2nd overall in Women's race.
Jenna Kalwa of Pennington, NJ ran an impressive
23:22 on the tough course layout, challenging every hill, as she pulled
away from the field and picked up her first of what could be many Morris
Mauler titles. Tori Martin of Milford finished a strong 3rd place in
24:34, breaking her age group record by nearly 2 minutes. Mike Anis of
Edison, NJ took 2nd place after stalking Dominic Grillo of Somerset for
the 1st half of the course, before Dominic pulled ahead on the uphills.
Paul Julich of Morris Plains took 3rd place. Checkout

Thanks to Starting
Line Sports for their generous gift certificates to award the winners
and the Inov-8 trail
shoe raffle drawing giveaway. The race crew received rave thanks from
the runners, and everyone had plenty of Veggie Chilli and miscellaneous
foods and snacks on this perfect running day. This was the biggest
Morris Mauler race held so far with a record number crowd of over 200
entrants.
Enilda Indyk, Susan Olesky, Lisa Digiacinto,
Dylan and Christian Kalwa also broke their respective age group records
on this 7th running of this classic cross country / trail "hybrid" race.
Most Improved runners were John Dixon, Andrew
Louie, Andrea Libretti, Gene Hammond, Joseph Kovacs, Kessiah Carlbon,
and Greg Verhoff. Thanks to everyone for making this such a great event.
Summer Screecher 5K

The only race with a folk music fest!

RESULTS ~~
Mike Bertocchi, a High School Junior (former 52 quarter miler/sophomore
moving up to distance running) from Morris Plains, NJ won the 1st Summer
Screecher 5k Trail race with a 20:38 over the tough layout of this
new event from Beautiful Sunrise Lake area of Lewis Morris Park. Carl
Goldschmidt, a strong masters runner from Doylestown, PA was only 5
seconds back in 2nd place. Carrie Brox of Princeton was the overall
woman's winner by a solid 2 minutes as she navigated the course and
finished looking as fresh as she started.
The Course rates a 7.7 on the "Hillometer" Chart and a rugged
5.3 on the "Stability/Agility Scale" rating system for trail
running. The tough climb up the Orange trail with exposed roots, rocks
and tight turns between 1 1/4 and 2 miles makes this race a challenge
for everyone's off road running skills.
The great Picnic/cookout/Music Festival/party at this serene picturesque
location was an occasion to remember with ideal conditions and lots
of food and socializing. Thanks to everyone for making this first event
such a success and stay tuned for the next event at this location.
The tremendous volunteers with such a friendly demeanor made this race
a wonderful experience. Thanks to Starting
Line Sports for the gift certificate awards for overall and age
group winners.
Word has it that March / April will host the "Wobbly Wombat" 6
miler @ Sunrise lake picnic area again. Good luck to everyone at the
Upcoming 7th "Morris Mauler" 5k at the upper Sugarloaf /
Mendham overlook picnic location. Remember, to run well up the hills,
one must train on hills specifically to overcome the challenge of severity
of the 4 brutal hill climbs. "Top 7" most improved runners
will get special awards at the Hibernation edition of the Morris Mauler.

Eamon Drew of Morristown wins 5th Morris

Mariah Seminara of Neigboring Mendham tops strong women's field in 3rd best
all-time performance.

Eamon Drew fought off a tenacious Brian
McAuley of Florham Park as both runners hammered up the tough hill climbs
to win his 1st Morris Mauler title. Eamon's time of 18:40 broke Dan Feder's
former record of 18:50 on the beautiful sunny 65 degree day. Eamon trains
here often from the local Delbarton School. Mariah Seminara of nearby
Mendham pulled away from Lisa D'Alessandro of Morristown over the last
1/2 of the course to win her first title on toughest 5k race in NJ. Angie
Dello from Whippany ran a very strong 3rd place finish besting her previous
top time on this brutal course of hills and trails. Mark Lorello of Budd
Lake was the 1st Master runner. William Piwtoratsky was the Most Improved
runner beating his best time by a huge margin in his 3rd consecutive
running of this challenging course. All runners enjoyed home made Vegan
Chili, cookout, liquid refreshments, in the perfect fall weather. Thanks
to everyone for making this event a success. Next Year's spring Morris
Mauler will be Sunday, June 4th, 2006 and the Fall Hibernation Edition
will be Saturday, November 4th 2006.

A First-Ever in NJ Event !
This race was in Honor of Marvin Allen
and Paul Krentar, Running Officiondos and friends!
The top 25 finishers were Awarded beautiful
Plaques in this inaugural and Annual Event
(2009 race will be Oct 24th or 31st)

The Race featured a New handicapping
system using prior Morris Mauler bests, road bests and Age Grading!
The new "Handicapped Stakes" format race turned out to be as exciting
a race as has ever happened on this classic Brutal layout @ Lewis Morris Park
in Morris Township, just adjacent to Jockey Hollow National Park. The Weather
was absolutely perfect with race temperatures in the Low to Mid 50's and reaching
60's for the picnic and barbecue following the exciting finishes of one of the
best of the 12 Morris Mauler races. The Morris Mauler race is a Cross Country
race with some Trail features to make this a unique XC/TRail Hybrid Race.
Our Winner of this inaugural race was Rick
McNulty from Mount Tabor with a great 3 and a 1/2 minute improvement
to his time from the 1st Morris Mauler race ever held on that Snowy Cold
December Morning with the course dry-crusty-snow covered day with temps
in the upper 20's and low 30's throughout the day. This was his 2nd Morris
Mauler race. He overcame Ira Augenzucker, Cranford, a tenacious and driven
competitor trying to hold off the last hill climb challenge of McNulty,
who tried to pass him over and over, but both runners were spent. The
course was modified to have "exactly" 1/4 mile to the finish
after eclipsing the final climb of the B...s....d Hill and the 17 years
of youth prevailed as Ira just could not hold off Rick's leg speed in
an exciting finish to an exciting race.
Kevin Daly of Long Valley, cross
country coach at Parsippany Hills, passed 3 runners in last 500 yards
to finish 3rd. Carl Bull, West New York, also chopped off 3 minutes to
finish 4th overall in this staggered start race. (All runners had their
own starting time, based on their previous racing resume.) Karen Sullivan,
Basking Ridge, rounded out the top 5 places by holding off the "Upstart" Cande
Olsen, Chatham, who also chopped off nearly 3 minutes from her previous
time. Cande has set 13 Personal Lifetime Best Times in this exciting
2008 season at the "young age" of 58. She is also assistant
race director for the exciting Giralda Farms Races (5k and
10K) in Convent Station (Madison), New Jersey. They should
have nearly 1,000 participants for the 1st time this year.
JL Seymore set a new 60's course record
in an unbeatable 22:27! Most 40 and over runners would love to run this
fast on the toughest 5k course in New Jersey. JL is 63 1/2 years young.
All in al,l 2/3 of the runners set "Course Best" times and
we had a heck of a party afterwards. Hoch and Schick went undefeated
in Horseshoes against much younger and "eyesight
worthy" competitors, but nevertheless held off late game rallys
from the likes of the Tummey and Guth Express team. Maybe they will finally
humble down and realize their demise.
Thanks so much for all the help of the gracious
volunteers, and of course a special thanks to Dave Siconolfi and Compuscore
for helping to initialize this brand new system of racing that will make
it's road debut in 2009 with a mass finish not seen at usual road races.
Marvin and Paul would have been proud to have witnessed this great racing
format and I thank them for their cameraderie, their friendship, their
devotion to the sport, and their living life to the fullest and all ideas
they shared with many race directors and their participation in living,
the most important Sport in life.

new and Exciting event!!!!!!!

Most Improved Results ~~
Kalwa wins 4th in a row! Roman runs fastest Mauler of
all-time in 2nd Victory! Juronics and Ehmann shatter Age group records!
Race Conditions were perfect w/temps in
low 60's during race, low humidity, shade, and good footing on the 10th
running of the Morris Mauler 5k Cross Country/ Trail race. Happy Mothers
day for all moms, who all received roses, and hopefully had a wonderful
day, except for brutal hill climbing of the race.
Scott Roman, age 19, of Monroe, NJ ran
18:25 to break a Brian Harris's course record of 18:34 Scott's race was
an extremely strong performance and should put him well into mid 15's
on the road this spring. Nick Birosik of Easton, PA became only the 5th
person to break 19, which would have won most of the previous Mauler
races,but he had to settle for a very good 2nd place. Peter Ehmann, age
13, of nearby Mendham finished 3rd and set a nearly unbeatable new age
group record of 19:58, and recording the best Age Graded performance
(PLP) of "every runner" of
all 10 Mauler races ever run.
Jenna Kalwa recorded her 4th victory in a row, running a very strong
race throughout, as she soon will be running for a very solid Hopewell
Valley High School team. Alexandra Niles of Montclair finished just 3
yards in front of Shelly Cutlip of Chatham in a very exciting match race
for 2nd and 3rd female.
Nationally ranked Sue Juronics set a phenomenal new age record for a
60 year old along with breaking her previous time from 5 years ago by
1 1/2 minutes.
Joe Aznar, Chris Core, and Jimmy Hart lead MiP runners with big improvements
on the personal bests. After battling cancer over last few years, Jimmy "love" Hart
smashes P.R. to coincide with his remission and reimbark on his running
career. Rounding out Most Improved runners were Jack and Stephen Skydel,
Maureen Noland, Scott Wisniewski, and Shelly Cutlip as they also set
new P.R.'s on their previous performances @ Lewis Morris Park on this
most difficult hilly and rugged course.
Leading the Clydesdales and Athena Category
were John Guth, Alec Savitsky, Steven Silverman,
Dana Zarlenga and Kerry Roberts. They all ran tough competitive
times on this brutal course.
We hope all runners enjoyed the fine "spread" of
fruits, Veggies, Chocolates, PB&J, Cookies, Snacks, and cookout and
beer after the tough race and we wish you good health the rest of the
year. Thanks to the massage therapists for sharing their time providing
invaluable therapy to the "beaten up" runners. September 20th
is the date for the Hibernation Morris Mauler 2008 !

OVERALL RESULTS ~~
Jenna Kalwa of Pennington won her
second consecutive Morris Mauler by improving her time
by 20 seconds and running the second fastest time ever on the course
(only two-time winner Joy Jaworski has run faster). Scott Roman improved
his best time by 12 seconds to record his first victory in two tries
at the Brutal Lewis Morris Park course. Former winner Dan Feder was
2nd and Princeton Sophomore Henry Feder was 3rd overall, chopping off
an amazing 5 1/2 minutes from his previous best time set three years
ago. Nova Roman from Monroe took runnerup honors on her first try on
the course. Natalie St. John of nearby Mendham finished 3rd place in
her 3rd consecutive Morris Mauler, having placed runnerup twice previously
- St. John is 12 years old!
Rick Detrolio won his age group again for
the 7th time in seven tries, as he has only once missed this classic
cross-country / trail hybrid race. Rick smashed the course record for
his new age group by over 3 1/2 minutes. Stephan Armington, Jeremy O'Leary,
and Brian Karl led the top Clydesdales with very strong performances
to climb the steep uphills. Times were consistant with past Mauler races,
as runners ran from 3 to over 5 minutes slower than their road 5k times.
The weather turned out perfect as temperatures
were moderate and the picnic/post race party was plentiful with many
berries of all sorts to start off the post race food festival. Most runners
hung around for the cookout and snacks and refreshments of all imaginations
on this beautiful day.
The top people from the Most Improved Runner
category were led by Michael Ztanze, who chopped off 8 1/2 minutes after
extensive hill training in preparation for challenging his best previous
time. Henry Feder, Elizabeth Kenyon, Keith Smerak, David Mojica, Ginny
Platania, and Steve Ambrosi rounded out the other top seven most improved
award winners who have come back time and again to master and tackle
this ultra tough 5k race course.

The Spring Edition of the Morris Mauler
5k Cross Country/Trail race featured a new course record of 18:34 as
Brian Harris eclipsed Eamon Drew's year old record of 18:40 on the always
tough - and this year's wet and mushy - course. Wendy Locke returned
for her 2nd attempt and came away in victory over a tenacious run from
Nicole Corre of Hoboken (2nd place), and Gazelle-like running from newcomer
Natalie St. John of Nearby Mendham (3rd place). At the age of 11, St.
John astounded everyone with some great uphill running ability. Three-time
winner Dominic Grillo was runner-up, matching last fall's 19:12 time.
(Grillo has run the race five times.) Greg Mullins of Wharton finished
in 3rd place with a strong run, along with his assistance as a race volunteer.
Thanks to Inov-8 shoes
for donating two pairs of trail running shoes and Starting
Line Sports for their generous donation of gift certificates to overall
and age group winners. Everyone enjoyed all the luscious strawberries,
blueberries, rasberries, Hochade sports drink, snacks, chocolate, and
the great bar-b-cue following the event. Fun was had by all, of course,
after the challenge of the ferocious hill running involved for the day.
Most Improved runner awards went to John
Kiraly, Elizabeth Macchiaverna, Bob Koppenol, Silvia Louie, Chris Jaworski,
and Kessiah Carlbon.

Results
Dominic Grillo won his 3rd Morris
Mauler title on the New Modified Mauler course in 19:04. Even though
the course is clearly tougher than the old course with the increased
difficulty, Dominic was still able to run a similar winning time. Dominic
typically runs low 16's for the road 5k to indicate the challenge of
the Morris Mauler 5k course. Jodi Sancetta won her first title as Champion
of the Morris Mauler 5k Spring x-country/Trail race. Jodi pulled away
from her rivals after the 2nd big hill climb @ the midpoint of the race
and looked strong finishing her 2nd Morris Mauler race. Robert Pasqual
was the first Master runner as he finished his 4th Morris Mauler race.
The next Morris Mauler will be Saturday, November 5th. (This is NY Marathon
weekend) So come on out on Saturday for the race and sit @ home on Sunday
and watch the NY Marathon on T.V
Morris Mauler 5K

Diane Ross and Daniel Feder won the Morris "Spring" Mauler
5k race on April 10, 2004. They set new course records for the course.
Top runners were up to 2 minutes slower than usual 5k times for the
tough course. Most runners who usually run over 21 minutes for 5K were
up to 3 and 4 minutes slower than their usual times on this incredibly
hilly and challenging course. Thanks to all those that participated.
It was a great day, with temperatures in mid 50's and the sun shining
brightly! Results
